Wintry mix spreads across Minnesota

The low pressure system that bought us a mix of freezing drizzle and snow overnight is moving away today. Moisture spinning around the back side of that system will continue to bring periods of light snow to eastern Minnesota this morning, with periods of snow in western Wisconsin and parts of northeastern Minnesota much of the day. Some areas could also see a bit of freezing drizzle at times.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s North American Mesoscale (NAM) forecast model shows the potential precipitation pattern this Sunday and Sunday evening:

Northeastern Minnesota plus parts of southeastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin could see an additional inch or two of snow today. Heavier snow is expected in southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.

Our average Twin Cities high temperature is 25 degrees on Jan. 31. Metro-area highs will creep into the lower 30s this Sunday. Southern and central Minnesota and much of western Wisconsin could also reach the lower 30s, with mainly 20s in northern Minnesota:

Sunday winds will be fairly light in much of eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin, with gusts of 11 mph or less:

Higher gusts are expected in western Minnesota and far northeastern Minnesota.

Plotted wind gusts are in knots, with 8 knots equal to about 9 mph and 14 knots equal to 16 mph.
