An arctic weekend; updated wind chill warnings, including the metro area

Heavy snow will hit Oklahoma

Our official Saturday low temp at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport was 8 below zero. Cloud cover kept lows in check for us, but mostly clear skies in northern Minnesota allowed temps to plummet into the -40s in many locations, with -50 reported 25 miles east of Ely. Most of Minnesota and western Wisconsin will have Saturday highs in the single-digits below zero, with teens below zero in parts of northwestern Minnesota. Parts of the Twin Cities metro area could briefly flirt with zero degrees Saturday afternoon. That’s beyond cold — our average Twin Cities high on Feb. 13 is 28 degrees!

Wind chill warnings continue in northwestern Minnesota Saturday through noon on Monday, with mainly wind chill advisories elsewhere in central and northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin.

It’ll be a dry Saturday in most areas. Far southern Minnesota could see some light snow showers.

The wind chill warning in the Twin Cities metro area starts at midnight Saturday night and runs to 11 a.m. Sunday:

This will probably be our coldest Valentine’s Day high temp in the Twin Cities in the past 100 years or so:

The coldest Feb. 14 high temp in Twin Cities weather records is 5 below zero, set in 1920. We’ll see if we tie or break that record!

Twin Cities metro area highs are projected to be around zero on Monday, followed by 9 above zero on Tuesday, then 12 on Wednesday, and 18 Thursday. We could top out in the upper 20s on Friday. That’s not bad, since our average Twin Cities high on Feb 19 is 30.

Snowstorm heads for Texas and Oklahoma

A winter storm will bring heavy snow or a wintry mix to much of Texas and Oklahoma this weekend.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s North American Mesoscale (NAM) forecast model shows the potential precipitation pattern for Sunday through Monday morning:
