A 50s weekend for most of us; update on Sunday p.m. rain chances

Northern Minnesota snow potential Sunday night and Monday

If you live in western Minnesota, you’ll have plenty of sunshine this weekend. Much of eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin will have pesky cloud cover, with a few glimpses of sun on Sunday.

After a mostly cloudy Saturday, the Twin Cities metro area could see a cloud/sun mix on Sunday. Here’s how the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s North American Mesoscale (NAM) forecast model depicts our Sunday cloud cover:

There’ll be periods of showers in northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin on Sunday, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. West-central Wisconsin and southeastern Minnesota could see scattered showers. Here’s the NAM forecast model’s precipitation depiction for Sunday and Sunday evening:

Showers spread into western Minnesota Sunday evening, and the showers could reach the metro area around 11 p.m. or midnight on Sunday.

Snow in some areas Monday and Monday night

The Twin Cities metro area will see periods of rain on Monday, with a mix of rain and snow showers Monday night and early Tuesday.

Northern Minnesota will probably see some accumulating snow overnight Sunday night into Monday and early Tuesday. Here’s a look at snow potential in northwestern Minnesota and eastern North Dakota:

Temperature trends

Most of Minnesota and western Wisconsin will see Saturday highs in the 50s, with 40s in north-central and northeastern Minnesota. Our average Twin Cities high temp is 55 degrees this time of year.

Sunday highs will be mainly in the 50s, with 40s in the northeast and few lower 60s in far southern Minnesota:

Sunday wind gusts of 16-22 mph are expected in southern and eastern Minnesota plus western Wisconsin:

Plotted gusts are in knots, with 16 knots equal to 18.4 mph.

Back to temperatures, Twin Cities metro area highs are projected to reach the upper 40s Monday, then just the mid 40s on Tuesday. Our highs then rebound to low 50s Wednesday, followed by mid 50s Thursday and upper 50s on Friday.

On this date in 1977, a record high of 86 was set at Redwood Falls, Minnesota.  Here in the Twin Cities, we also set our April 10 record high in 1977, with 88 degrees.
