Wintry mix spreads across Minnesota

More sunshine and seasonable temperatures finally return across Minnesota through most of the weekend, then cold weather makes a comeback next week.

Minnesota started off in the 30s Friday morning except for the Arrowhead, which dropped into the 20s under clear skies and light winds overnight.

More of the state can expect a fair amount of sunshine Friday, although the western edge of the state stays mostly cloudy.

This is because a storm that will stay south of Minnesota is pushing light precipitation and more clouds into the Dakotas, and some of that cloud cover is affecting our western border. That portion of the state also stays a little breezier. 

Under less sunshine, western Minnesota sees highs in the 40s, while most of the state makes it into the 50s.

Saturday, the sunshine is more prevalent across all of Minnesota, so the entire state makes it into the 50s.

Friday and Saturday, highs stay near average thanks to the return of more sun, but do not get any warmer because of a northerly flow. Sunday brings a much more mixed forecast across the state.  

During the day Sunday, a cold front starts moving into northern Minnesota by the afternoon, capping highs there in the 40s. Meanwhile, southern Minnesota gets a westerly wind flow ahead of the front, warming temperatures to around 60.

The front moves in from the north Sunday afternoon, clearing through the southern edge of the state during the overnight. This plunges temperatures across the state by Monday, with highs only in the 30s north and low 40s south.

Winds will also be gusty Monday, pushing wind chill temperatures down into the 20s and 30s.

There will also be rain along with the front, although it currently looks lighter and is expected to move through quickly. It moves through north to south from Sunday afternoon through Monday morning. 

As temperatures drop from the cold air, it is also likely some snow could briefly mix in.  

Behind the storm, temperatures stay below average most of the week, although they get a little closer to average again the second half of the week.
