Sunday night t-storm chances highest to the south; cool week ahead

Shower chances linger into Monday

If you have outdoor plans Sunday evening, be prepared for some periods of rain. Some locations will also have thunder and lightning. The chance of thunderstorms is highest from south-central and southeastern Minnesota into parts of western Wisconsin.

The NWS issued severe thunderstorm warnings late Sunday afternoon for a few southeastern Minnesota counties, and additional severe weather warnings are possible Sunday evening in southern Minnesota and portions of Wisconsin. The most recent severe weather outlook from the NWS Storm Prediction Center highlighted (in dark green) the areas of southern Minnesota and Wisconsin with a marginal risk of severe weather into Sunday evening and overnight Sunday night:

Monday shower chances

Northern Minnesota and southeastern Minnesota have the best chance of showers on Monday, but there could also be a few scattered showers in the Twin Cities metro area and western Wisconsin.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s High Resolution Rapid-Refresh (HRRR) forecast model shows the potential precipitation pattern for the daylight hours of Monday as well as Monday evening:

There could be a few flakes mixed with the rain near the Canadian border.

Temperature trends

Our average Twin Cities high temp is 66 degrees on May 3. We may touch 60 in the metro area Monday afternoon. Monday highs range from 40s in northern Minnesota to 60s in the southeast:

Plotted forecast gusts are in knots, with 22 knots equal to around 25 mph.

Back to temperatures, Twin Cities metro area highs are projected to be around 60 (give or take a degree or two) from Tuesday through Friday.

We could have below-normal temps next weekend into the beginning of the following week. The NWS Climate Prediction Center shows a tendency for below-normal temps in Minnesota and Wisconsin from May 8 through May 12:
