A cool Mother's Day; temps rebound by midweek

Frost potential to start the week

Chilly air will linger through the remainder of this weekend.

Some areas of frost are expected late Saturday night and early Sunday morning in central and northern Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Most of the Twin Cities metro area is expected to escape frost overnight, but patchy frost will be possible; especially outside of the 494/694 loop.

You can hear updated weather information for Minnesota and western Wisconsin on the MPR network, and you’ll see updated weather info on the MPR News live weather blog.

Sunday will be cool, but you might remember that it was even chillier on Mother’s Day last year. The Twin Cities high temp was only 48 degrees on Mother’s Day 2020, and it was also windy.

Some spots in the Twin Cities metro area could touch 60 degrees Sunday afternoon, which is still 8 degrees shy of our average May 9 high temp. Much of Minnesota will have Sunday highs in the 50s, with a few 40s in northeastern Minnesota:

Sunday afternoon wind gusts will be mainly in the 12-17 mph range:

Gusts could top 20 mph in parts of northwestern Minnesota. Plotted gusts are in knots, with 13 knots equal to 15 mph.

Sunday rain chances?

Most of Minnesota and western Wisconsin can expect a dry Mother’s Day. One forecast model shows some very scattered showers or sprinkles Sunday afternoon in far southern Minnesota, plus parts of western Wisconsin and northeastern Minnesota.

Temperature trends

Minnesota and western Wisconsin could see some areas of early morning frost on Monday and Tuesday. Our high temps will gradually rebound as we go through the week.

Twin Cities metro area highs are projected to reach the upper 50s Monday, followed by lower 60s Tuesday, mid 60s Wednesday and upper 60s Thursday and Friday.

We could see above-normal temps next weekend into the following week. The NWS Climate Prediction Center shows a tendency for above-normal temps in Minnesota and Wisconsin from May 16 through May 22:

We’ll see if that pans out.
