Chilly start to the week, then warming toward the weekend

Chances of rain late in the week

Mother’s Day has been on the cool side for Minnesota. Sunshine pushed some temperatures into the low 60s. But widespread clouds held much of north central and northeastern Minnesota to the 40s for high temperatures.

And it has been a pretty weekend around the Twin Cities. Tulips continue to bloom. Redbud trees have been flocked with red buds for what seems like weeks. And this past week crabapple trees have been exploding with blossoms ranging from white to various shades of pink and red.

Chilly start to the week

We will be slow to warm up as weather systems are in slow motion across the northern part of the country.

Sunday night will be a chilly one with low temperatures in the mid to upper 20s across northern Minnesota and 30s for the rest of the state. The Twin Cities should drop into the upper 30s near the urban core and mid 30s are likely for outlying areas, especially Anoka County on the north side.

Monday will be another cooler than normal day. Expect high temperatures mainly in the 50s, but just upper 40s in the northeast corner. The Twin Cities should have a high around 57, which is about 10 degrees cooler than normal.

The coldest early-morning this upcoming week will come our way on Tuesday with widespread frosty temperatures.

Then warming

Warming will finally begin, gradually, during the day on Tuesday.

The Twin Cities should see high temperatures well into the upper 60s and possibly to 70 later in the week.

Chances of rain late in the week

Weak disturbances and a lack of low level moisture will limit our chances for significant rain over the upcoming week. But there will be chances of scattered showers late in the week. Models are fuzzy as to the timing, but periods of rain could easily break out at times from Friday through the weekend. Afternoon or evening thunderstorms are possible over the weekend.

Tulips

Getting back to tulips. My wife and I saw these blooming but starting to wilt during a walk this Sunday morning. At least I think they are some types of tulip. The bright color mixture sure caught our eyes.
