Wintry mix spreads across Minnesota

How do you like summer so far? I know it’s still spring, but the Twin Cities and many areas had Saturday highs in the 80s with dew points in the 60s. That’s typical July weather, not something that you can count on in May.

A cold front sags southward Saturday night, then stalls out somewhere in central Minnesota on Sunday. As a result, Sunday highs will range from the 40s in northeastern Minnesota to 80s in parts of southern Minnesota:

The best chance of showers and thunderstorms Saturday evening and overnight will be in the northern third of Minnesota plus parts of west-central Minnesota. The NWS Storm Prediction Center shows a marginal risk (shaded dark green) of severe weather Saturday evening and overnight Saturday night in west-central Minnesota and much of the northern third of Minnesota:

Marginal risk means that an isolated severe t-storm is possible. The Storm Prediction Center updates the 

A few scattered thunderstorms could spread into central Minnesota later Saturday evening and southward from there overnight.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected in Minnesota and western Wisconsin Sunday and Sunday night. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s High Resolution Rapid-Refresh (HRRR) forecast model shows the scattered rain pattern Sunday and Sunday evening:

Pay more attention to the scattered nature of the HRRR rain pattern than the exact location of the rain at any point in time.

The Storm Prediction Center shows a marginal risk of severe weather Sunday and Sunday evening from central and southern Minnesota into Wisconsin:

Twin Cities metro area highs are projected to reach the lower 80s on Monday, followed by mid 80s Tuesday. By the way, comfortable dew points return Tuesday afternoon and then linger for several days. We’ll see highs in the mid 70s Wednesday, followed by upper 60s Thursday and around 70 on Friday.  Temps are expected to be slightly above normal next weekend. 

We could see near-normal temperatures or slightly above-normal temps during the first few days of June. The NWS Climate Prediction Center shows a slight tendency for above-normal temps in much of Minnesota and Wisconsin from May 30 through June 5:

Our average Twin Cities high temperature is 74 degrees on June 1.
