Areas of showers and thunderstorms Sunday; unsettled weather lingers into Monday

Cooler midweek

Summery warmth lingers over southern Minnesota this Sunday, but it’s much chillier to the north. Sunday highs will range from 40s in parts of northeastern Minnesota to 80s in the southwest. Parts of the the Twin Cities metro area could top out in the upper 70s. Our average high temp is in the lower 70s this time of year. We’ll have dew points in the sticky 60s.

Rain and thunder chances

Minnesota and western Wisconsin will see areas of showers and thunderstorms today and tonight. They will be slow-moving thunderstorms, so some spots could see heavy rainfall at times.

The NWS Storm Prediction Center has trimmed back the marginal risk of severe weather for Sunday and Sunday night; the marginal risk area (shaded dark green) still includes portions of Traverse and Big Stone counties of west-central Minnesota:

You can see that much of Minnesota and western Wisconsin are in the SPC marginal risk category for Monday and Monday night. Marginal risk means that an isolated severe thunderstorm is possible. Periods of general (non-severe) thunderstorms are expected in the light-green shaded areas on the SPC outlooks. The Storm Prediction Center updates the severe weather outlook every few hours.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s High Resolution Rapid-Refresh (HRRR) forecast model shows the potential rain pattern Monday and Monday evening:
