90s return; which years had the most 90+ highs?

Fewer hot days this week

After 9 consecutive days with highs in the 90s, the Twin Cities had a high of 87 degrees on Saturday.

Highs will return to the 90s this Sunday in the Twin Cities and most of the southern half of Minnesota, plus west-central Wisconsin. Northern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin will see mainly 80s and there could be a few 70s in far northern Minnesota, near the Canadian border. Dew points will be fairly comfortable this afternoon, mainly in the lower 50s.

June temps of 90 or warmer

Today will be our 10th day this June with a high of 90 degrees or warmer in the Twin Cities. A check of Twin Cities weather records revealed just 6 other Junes with 10 or more days of 90 degrees or warmer:

Sunday thunder chances

The northern third of Minnesota plus much of northern Wisconsin will have the best chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms this Sunday and Sunday evening.

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center shows a marginal risk of severe weather in a small portion of northeastern Minnesota and much of northern Wisconsin this Sunday and Sunday night.

The marginal risk area is shaded dark green on the NWS graphic below:

Marginal risk means that an isolated severe thunderstorm is possible. The severe weather outlook is updated several times each day by the NWS Storm Prediction Center.

Best rain chance this week?

Most parts of Minnesota are either abnormally dry or in drought right now. Our best chance of meaningful rain this week will be on Thursday. NOAA’s Global Forecast System (GFS) model may be overdoing the rain coverage a bit for Thursday, but it does show a nice batch of rain:

Let’s hope that we see some soakers!
