Showers and thunderstorms end Sunday evening; breezy and much cooler Monday

Minnesota sure began June with much hot, dry weather. My rain gauge in Minneapolis failed to record any measurable precipitation during the first nineteen days of the month.

Soggy Father’s Day

Sunday became a soggy Father’s Day at times as a sturdy weather system crossed Minnesota with widespread showers. Northern Minnesota has been picking up generally widespread rain while scattered thunderstorms with periods of heavy rain and gusty winds have proceeded across about the southern half of the state.

A severe thunderstorm watch that had been in effect until 9 p.m. for south central and southeastern Minnesota will continue to be cancelled from west to east this evening as the storms move out of those areas.

Cold front

A cold front from the northwest will end the rainfall this evening. Gusty northwest winds behind the front Sunday night will sweep in much cooler Canadian high pressure for Monday.

High temperatures on Monday should range from the upper 50s in the northeast around Ely to mostly 60s for the rest of the state. The Twin Cities should have a breezy high around 66 beneath mostly sunny skies.

Warmer beginning on Tuesday

Warmer weather will quickly begin to return on Tuesday. Look for highs mainly from the mid 70s to the low 80s, but cooler near Lake Superior.

The Twin Cities will see a return to hot and muggy on Wednesday and Thursday when the high temperatures are likely to touch 90 degrees.

Thursday will be the more humid of the two days.

Chances of rain

Sunday’s rain will not be enough to pull the state out of drought. And the next week or so does not look all that wet. Some rain might reach southern Minnesota on Tuesday. A better chance of rain for much of the state will probably come our way about Thursday.

Summer solstice

And Happy Summer Solstice, coming at 10:32 p.m. Sunday to round out Father’s Day.
