Monday's cooler weather is quickly replaced by more heat

Minnesota sees another chance for rain midweek

Monday will be the coolest day Minnesota has seen all of June, but it is short-lived. Hot weather cranks back up by mid-week, and another round of showers and storms is likely.

Monday’s weather

The same system that brought widespread rain to Minnesota Sunday also moved a cold front across the state. Behind that front, the state stays under a chillier flow Monday, with breezy winds out of the northwest.

That cool air combined with skies that cleared overnight allowed morning temperatures to drop into the 40s for most of Minnesota, with a few 50s south, including the Twin Cities. Highs will only be in the 60s, which is 10 to 15 degrees below average.

While it is not that unusual to have days occasionally that far below average, Minnesota has been so hot during the month of June that for most of the state, Monday will be the coolest day in more than three weeks, since late May.

Skies stay mostly sunny through the day, although northern Minnesota may see a few more clouds and possible sprinkles, particularly in the afternoon.

Heat returns

Temperatures rebound quickly, and already Tuesday, most of Minnesota will be in the 70s, which is near-seasonable for late June. Average highs for June 21 range from the mid-70s north to lower 80s south, including the Twin Cities at 81.

Under the influence of winds from the south, the heat returns Wednesday, with almost all of Minnesota seeing highs at least in the 80s and some 90s likely west and south.

A cold font starts to cool northern Minnesota a few degrees Thursday, but the southern half of the state remains hot, with that slightly cooler air moving in Friday.

Here is that forecast for the Twin Cities:

It currently looks like highs stay mostly in the 80s for the weekend.

The same system that swings a cold front across Minnesota Thursday is also forecast to bring scattered showers and storms from Wednesday evening into Thursday, with some lingering precipitation possible on Friday.

Unfortunately, the precipitation totals with this next system look much lower than what Minnesota saw on Sunday. Much of the state can expect under one-half inch of rain, and in western Minnesota the rain may be spotty.

Any rain is still very beneficial as the state remains much drier than average.
