Wintry mix spreads across Minnesota

Minnesota is starting Monday very foggy and will end the day on a stormy note. 

A storm system over the weekend brought rain to most of southern Minnesota and higher dew points across the state.

Now, as that system has moved out, and under clearing skies and light winds overnight, the state is beginning Monday under widespread fog that is dense in some areas. Many areas are still reporting visibility under one mile as of 8:30 a.m. Portions of central and northeast Minnesota including Duluth, Hinckley and Brainerd are under a dense fog advisory until 10 a.m.

All that moisture also kept temperatures mild overnight, and most of Minnesota started Monday off in the 60s with a couple isolated spots in the 50s.

As the fog lifts, sunshine breaks through, and by the afternoon it will be mostly sunny and hot. Highs will be in the upper 80s and low 90s for most of the state. 

With dew points in the 60s and even a few 70s south, it will also be very humid.

By Monday evening, another storm system starts pushing into northwestern Minnesota, bringing showers and storms along with it. Especially along the northwestern edge of Minnesota, scattered severe weather is possible, with damaging winds and large hail the primary risk. 

Any rain with the storms would be very beneficial given the drought and considering that northern Minnesota missed most of the rainfall over the weekend.

That storm system keeps moving through the state overnight Monday, although severe weather becomes less likely in the overnight. 

By Tuesday morning, much of the state has chance for a few spotty showers or storms, including the Twin Cities. Rain totals are expected to stay low.

Most of the rain clears out by the afternoon and skies turn sunnier, although northern Minnesota could keep a few spotty showers around through Wednesday morning due to another disturbance. 

Drier air moves in behind Tuesday’s weather system, and most of Minnesota can expect dew points to drop into the 50s by Tuesday night.

Highs Tuesday will range from near 80 north to the upper 80s south.

Not only does lower humidity return behind Tuesday’s storm, but the state reverts to the warm and dry pattern Minnesota has experienced much of the summer.

Rain chances are limited through the first half of next week.

Northern Minnesota can expect some highs only in the 70s, especially Thursday and Friday, but overall, the state also sees slightly above average temperatures over the next week, with most highs in the 80s.

Additionally, the wind pattern late week may bring some areas of smoke and haze back into the state.
