Rain chances continue into Saturday night; mild temps stay with us

Fall color update for leaf-peepers

A slow-moving low pressure system will bring some areas of rain to Minnesota and western Wisconsin this Saturday and Saturday night. An isolated thunderstorm is also possible.

You can hear updated weather information for Minnesota and western Wisconsin on the Minnesota Public Radio News network, and you can see updated weather info on the MPR News live weather blog.

Sunday shower chance?

Most of the shower activity moves off to the east on Sunday. There could be a brief Sunday shower in eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s High-Resolution Rapid-Refresh (HRRR) forecast model shows the potential rain pattern from 7 a.m. on Sunday through 7 p.m. Sunday:

Above-normal temps

Our average Twin Cities high temp is 66 degrees on Oct. 2. Many spots in the metro area will creep above 70 degrees this Saturday afternoon. Highs in the 70s are also expected today in far northwestern Minnesota plus southeastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Saturday dew points will be in the sticky 60s in eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin.

Sunday highs will be in the 70s south, with 60s to the north:

Back to high temps, Twin Cities metro area highs are projected to reach the lower 70s Monday through Wednesday, followed by mid 70s on Thursday and Friday.

Above-normal temps may linger through next weekend and into the following week. The NWS Climate Prediction Center shows a tendency for above-normal temps in Minnesota and Wisconsin from Oct. 9 through Oct. 15:

Fall color update

The percentage of changeover to fall colors is highest in northern Minnesota right now. Here’s the latest fall color report from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources:

Keep in mind that all deciduous trees are included in the fall color report, not just maples. Wisconsin fall color info can be found here.

There are some pockets of very good fall color elsewhere, including the Twin Cities. I saw a lot of fall color yesterday along the Mississippi River; here’s the view (from St. Paul) across the river on Friday:

There will be very nice fall color in some spots along the Twin Cities Marathon route on Sunday!
