Wintry mix spreads across Minnesota

Morning fog eases but clouds increase on Wednesday as high pressure across Minnesota starts to shift. By Thursday, a few rain showers return and at least some part of Minnesota will then get showers or storms every day through the weekend.

The recent pattern of high pressure dominating Minnesota’s forecast is starting to shift, and with winds now from the southeast, there has been less fog across Minnesota Wednesday morning. 

Fog is still present along much of eastern Minnesota. However, visibility is better in most places compared to Monday and Tuesday.

The only locations still under a dense fog advisory Wednesday morning are near Lake Superior. 

While there is less fog, the southeast wind flow does bring a bit more moisture across the state, so southern and eastern Minnesota can expect a few more clouds Wednesday. 

The state started mild again, with 40s and 50s, and highs will also be above average for October. Most of Minnesota is forecast to have highs in the 70s again, and under more abundant sunshine, the western edge of the state could once again see a couple of 80s.

The warm weather continues Thursday, but the recent dry trend comes to an end as a storm sliding well south of Minnesota brings a couple spotty showers over the state. 

Those showers are most likely in southern Minnesota, and possibly up into the North Shore, and carry minimal rain amounts.

On Friday a separate, more potent storm heads toward the state, bringing periods of showers and storms through early Sunday. 

It currently looks like the track of that storm targets northern Minnesota with most of the rainfall, where some areas could see more than 1 inch of rain. 

Southern Minnesota is currently forecast to see much spottier activity and rain totals predominantly less than one-quarter inch.

A few stronger storms are possible in northern Minnesota. We will keep you updated on any severe weather risk as the storm approaches.

The storm also curtails the recent warm trend. Cooler air behind the storm brings all of Minnesota back to highs in the 60s by Sunday.  

Here is that forecast for the Twin Cities:

High in the 60s are then likely through the first half of next week. 

This is not as warm as the current 70s and low 80s, but it will still be at least 5 to 10 degrees above average for mid-October.
