Winds of November continue with temperature flip-flops

November tends to be a windy month across Minnesota. Cold air typically builds across Canada while much of the United States remains fairly warm. Temperature gradients increase, pressure gradients tighten and low pressure (storm) systems deepen while winds strengthen.

And that’s what we have going on this week. Deep low pressure over Manitoba on Wednesday is spinning strong westerly winds across Minnesota and will send chillier air across the state through Thursday before giving it a significant rest.

The strongest winds in our state for Wednesday will blow across the western edge of Minnesota, near North Dakota, where winds could gust to near 50 mph in the afternoon.

A wind advisory has been posted for that western edge of the state and well into the Dakotas for Wednesday while a high wind warning for even stronger winds has been posted farther west in the Dakotas.

High temperatures on Wednesday should range from the low 30s in the northwest to the mid-40s in the southeast around Winona. The Twin Cities will have an afternoon high near 41 degrees with an increasing west wind gusting to around 35 mph in the afternoon.

Clouds will expand and thicken during the day. Scattered light snow showers will sweep across northern Minnesota.

Cooler, raw Thursday

Thursday will be quite breezy and cooler as more Canadian air arrives. Expect high temperatures from the mid 20s in the northwest to the low 30s across most of the state. The Twin Cities should have a high around 34 with a gusty northwest wind.

Milder later in the week before the next flip-flop

Friday will bring milder temperatures just ahead of a Canadian cold front. How much warmth we hang onto for Saturday will depend on how fast that cold front crosses the state.

An early estimate is that the Twin Cities will likely enjoy a fairly mild Saturday for the second half of November.

Cooler Sunday; cold Monday

Cooler air on Sunday will precede a cold Monday with highs just in the upper teens in the northwest and 20s for most of the state. The Twin Cities might struggle to reach 30 for a high.

Thanksgiving week early outlook

So far, no major storms seem likely to impact travel across Minnesota next week. But November is notoriously fickle.

Temperatures do look as though they might return to the colder side again late next week and into the following week for much of the eastern half of the country.
