Cold wind Thursday; Thanksgiving weather looks cold, quiet

Wind gusts peaked at 48 mph in the Twin Cities Wednesday afternoon and really blew the leaves and flurries around. Winds will continue to blow through Thursday afternoon due to a tight pressure gradient wrapped around deep low pressure centered over James Bay in Ontario.

Look for a cloudy, windy, colder day with scattered flurries and light snow showers. High temperatures Thursday afternoon will range from the chilly mid 20s in northwestern Minnesota to the low 30s for the rest of the state.

The Twin Cities should have a high around 32 with a blustery northwest wind of 15 to 30 mph and some gusts to about 35 mph.

Breezes will diminish Thursday evening. Most of the clouds should leave us to give night owls a good chance to view a lovely partial lunar eclipse, which occurs when the moon passes through Earth’s shadow.

The moon will begin entering the umbra, the dark part of the shadow, at 1:18 a.m. on Friday. The peak of the eclipse, when 97.6 percent of the moon’s surface will be in Earth’s shadow and probably appearing a dull reddish color, will occur at 3:03 a.m.

Just a thin sliver of the moon will be lighted by the sun at that time. Look for it high in the western sky. The show will end at 4:48 a.m.

Winds will pick up again on Friday, but from the south for a milder day. Highs should reach the 30s across northern Minnesota and low to mid-40s in the south. The Twin Cities will likely have a high around 40.

Saturday cold front

A cold front will enter the state from the northwest on Saturday. The Twin Cities should have a rather mild day ahead of the front with a high reaching near 43 degrees while northwestern Minnesota turns colder.

Colder Sunday and Monday

Sunday will be blustery and colder thanks to Canadian air behind the front.

Monday will be our coldest day in the near future, with highs In the 20s north to low 30s in the south. The Twin Cities might reach only about 30 degrees Monday afternoon.

More temperature ups and downs

Temperatures will moderate a bit on Tuesday and maybe into Wednesday for parts of the state before a strong cold front brings us a cold and breezy Thanksgiving Day. That chilly air is likely to remain with us into the following weekend.

Storm-free next week

Travel weather should be quite favorable across the state next week as no major storms are expected, at least not as of right now.
