Windy and colder Sunday afternoon; Gale warning for Lake Superior

Light snow northern Minn. and NW Wis.

The temperature at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport hit 38 degrees around 9 a.m. today. That’s close to our average Nov. 21 high of 39 degrees. Falling temps are expected in the metro area and most of Minnesota and western Wisconsin from late morning through the afternoon.

The cold front has already dropped temps in northwestern and central Minnesota from their early morning highs. Wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph are expected in most areas, with even higher gust along the North Shore of Lake Superior. Afternoon wind chills will dip into the teens in the metro area and will be in the the single digits in much of northern Minnesota.

A wind advisory runs from noon Sunday until midnight along the North Shore of Lake Superior.

Light snow lingers in the north

Roughly the northern third of Minnesota, plus northwestern Wisconsin, will continue to see some areas of light snow this morning and early afternoon. Parts of far northeastern Minnesota could see snow showers linger into late afternoon.

Monday highs will be in the 20s in northern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin, with mainly 30s elsewhere:

Forecast gusts are in knots, with 10 knots equal to 11.5 mph.

Back to forecast highs, Twin Cities metro area highs are projected to reach the upper 40s on Tuesday, followed by mid 40s on Wednesday. We’re projecting a chilly 30 degree high temp on Thanksgiving, followed by lower 30s on Friday.

Quiet stretch of weather

Thanksgiving travel weather looks good at this point. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Global Forecast System (GFS) model shows the potential precipitation pattern for Wednesday through Friday:

The loop has 6 hour gaps between images, but it shows very little precipitation in the Wednesday through Friday time frame.

Weather nugget

Our average Twin Cities high temperature is now 39 degrees. Our average high doesn’t get to 40 degrees again until March 12.  Remember that’s an average…we’ll still see a few days with highs in the 40s this month.
