Unexciting weather through Monday; snow north Tuesday; cold blast Wednesday

Temperatures will feel mild almost statewide through Tuesday. Then a Canadian cold front will bring a blast of frigid air southeastward to all of Minnesota for Wednesday and Thursday.

Sunday evening weather

Scattered flurries will continue Sunday evening in northeastern Minnesota and maybe western Wisconsin. A little light freezing drizzle is also possible during the evening in southeastern Minnesota, but any accumulations should be very light.

The big weather story nationally for Sunday night and Monday will be the winter storm spreading snow, rain, sleet and freezing rain northeastward from the Deep South.  Snow has been falling as far south as Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia. Winter storm warnings remain posted for a huge region from Alabama and Georgia to Maine. More than a foot of snow, along with strong winds causing blowing and drifting, is likely in parts of northwestern Pennsylvania and western New York. And an ice storm warning remains in effect into Sunday night for a narrow strip of counties in South Carolina and Georgia.

Continued mild around here through Tuesday

The mild air will hang around through Tuesday for most of Minnesota. Northern parts of the state, especially the Arrowhead, will see a swath of snow on Tuesday. A winter storm watch has been posted for southern Cook County near Lake Superior for likely heavy snow that day.

Arctic cold front midweek

Our unexciting weather will crash to a halt Tuesday night as a sharp Canadian cold front sweeps southeast across the state. Blustery northwest winds will bring us much colder temperatures and dangerous wind chills by Wednesday. Winds gusting to around 40 mph or higher are likely to cause blowing and drifting snow, as well.

Thursday will be a very cold day. Expect low temperatures that morning in the teens below zero across southern Minnesota and negative 20s to near 30 below in much of the north.
