Mild Monday and Tuesday; windy and much colder by Wednesday

The big weather story nationally continues to be the major winter storm now plowing into the Northeast.

Heavy snow is falling in much of the warned area. Heavy rain and some mixed precipitation continue to fall on the storm’s eastern side. Powerful winds will cause significant blowing and drifting where snow falls while winds on the eastern side will generate coastal flooding for Long Island and New England.

Mild Monday for Minnesota

Monday will be a mild January day. High temperatures will be in the 20s for most of Minnesota with some chillier upper teens in the northeast around Ely and low 30s in the southwest around Pipestone and Luverne. Scattered flurries should continue in the northeast with little accumulation.

The Twin Cities will be mostly cloudy with a temperature just reaching the low 30s and a light southwest breeze.

Snow up north Tuesday

Snow will break out in northern Minnesota on Tuesday, especially across much of the Arrowhead.  A winter storm watch has been posted for Lake and Cook Counties for Tuesday for heavy snow and strong winds.

Accumulations in excess of eight inches is most likely from around Grand Marais to Grand Portage in the northeast tip of the state.

Arctic air headed our way

A Canadian cold front will slide into northwestern Minnesota on Tuesday and then race southeastward across the whole state Tuesday night. with blustery winds and falling temperatures.

Frigid Wednesday and Thursday

We will wake up to a cold, wind-blown day statewide on Wednesday. Expect high temperatures only in the negative single digits in the northwest and just positive singles for the rest of the state. The Twin Cities should have an afternoon high temperature around 1 above and wind chills in the minus 20s.

Thursday will be the coldest day, but not as windy as Wednesday. Morning lows are likely to be in the 20s below zero in northern Minnesota and negative teens in central and southern sections. High temperatures seem likely to remain in the negative singles for most of the state. The Twin Cities should have a chilly high around zero.

Some recovery later in the week

Temperatures will moderate some for Friday and Saturday, but it will still be chillier than normal for late January.
