Weekend weather: Cool Saturday, snow chances up north; warm Sunday

Your warmest coat and gloves will be appropriate when you head out the door Saturday morning. Temperatures will recover very nicely on Sunday, with March warmth returning by afternoon.

Low temperatures early Saturday morning will be in the teens below zero in most of northern and central Minnesota, with single digits below zero in the Twin Cities metro area and southern Minnesota:

Saturday highs will range from teens in northeastern Minnesota to 30s in the far southwest:

Twin Cities metro area highs will be in the upper 20s on Saturday. That’s chilly — the average March 12 high temp in the Twin Cities is 40 degrees.

Sunday highs will range from the 40s in southern Minnesota to 20s in far northern Minnesota:

Some spots in the Twin Cities metro area could reach the mid-40s Sunday afternoon.

Best weekend snow chance?

Some snow is expected to move into northwestern Minnesota late Saturday afternoon, then spread across much of northern Minnesota and portions of northwestern Wisconsin Saturday evening and overnight Saturday into Sunday.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s North American Mesoscale (NAM) forecast model shows the potential precipitation pattern from noon Saturday to noon on Sunday:

Some spots in the northern third of Minnesota could see 2 inches or more of new snow.
