A low pressure system will spread rain showers into much of western and northern Minnesota this morning, possibly mixed with a few flakes, then it’ll be mainly rain in those areas during the afternoon hours.
The rain coverage expands into central Minnesota this afternoon, then into east-central Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin this evening. The precipitation in northern Minnesota could transition to a rain/snow mix this evening, then change over to all snow overnight tonight.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s North American Mesoscale (NAM) forecast model shows the potential precipitation pattern from 9 a.m. Sunday to 11 p.m. Sunday:
The Twin Cities metro area could see a few scattered rain showers very late this afternoon and this evening.

Temperature trends
Sunday highs will reach the 40s in roughly the northwestern half of Minnesota, with 50s in the southeastern half of Minnesota and into western Wisconsin:
A few spots in south-central and southeastern Minnesota could touch 60.
Sunday afternoon wind gusts will be highest in southeastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin:
Forecast wind gusts are in knots, with 20 knots equal to 23 mph.
Still plenty of snow up north
Snow lovers will be interested to know that there’s still plenty of snow on the ground in north-central and northeastern Minnesota. Here’s the weekly snow depth map from the Minnesota State Climatology Office:
Most of north-central Minnesota has 8 inches or more of snow on the ground. Northeastern Minnesota has 12 inches or more of snow on the ground, with 18 inches or more of snow cover in portions of eastern Lake County and 24 inches or more of snow cover in much of Cook County.
