Mainly dry Monday; wet Tuesday into Wednesday, then some flakes

It was a breezy but pleasant Sunday afternoon. I noticed that there were a lot of golfers at Highland National Golf Course in St. Paul on Sunday, and there were several ducks and geese on the ponds that border the course.

The Sunday high temp at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport was 61 degrees. It was our first official Twin Cities high in the 60s this month. We’ll have mild temps the next few days, followed by a sharp drop in temps later this week.

Some snow to the north Sunday evening and overnight

Rain has spread across much of northwestern and north-central Minnesota Sunday afternoon. The rain coverage will expand eastward across roughly the northern half of Minnesota Sunday evening and eventually into northwestern Wisconsin. The rain is expected to transition to a rain/snow mix later Sunday evening in northern Minnesota, then change over to all snow overnight. The snow may linger into early Monday in portions of northeastern Minnesota.

Temperature trends

Monday highs will be in the 50s in southern Minnesota and western Wisconsin, with mainly 40s in northern Minnesota:

Monday afternoon wind gusts could reach 25-30 mph in northeastern Minnesota:

Back to temperatures, Twin Cities highs are projected to reach the lower 50s Tuesday, followed by upper 50s Wednesday then chilly upper 30s on Thursday and Friday.

A strong low pressure system will bring periods of rain to much of Minnesota and western Wisconsin Tuesday and Wednesday. A few thunderstorms are also possible Tuesday and Wednesday. In the colder air over northwestern Minnesota there could be areas of heavy snow.

At this point it looks like the Twin Cities metro area could see a mix of rain and snow on Thursday and then some lingering flakes into early Friday.
