Strong thunderstorms could develop late Thursday with damaging winds, large hail and isolated tornadoes. The highest risk of severe weather is in southeastern Minnesota. Temperatures will be warmer and it will be more humid across southern Minnesota.

We’ll look for storms to pop up in southeastern Minnesota late Thursday afternoon or evening and merge into a line of storms that could produce damaging winds and large hail. The initial hour or two of storm development is when we could see an isolated tornado chance.

Frost possible this weekend in northern Minn.

Behind the thunderstorm risk will come some rather cool air for this time of year. We’ve been basking in summer temperatures for the last couple of weeks but the weekend will bring well below-normal temperatures.

The upper-level trough creating the storms ahead of it Thursday will draw in that chill from Canada.

Highs Friday will still be in the 60s and 50s before it cools even more.

Saturday will see highs only in the 50s for southern Minnesota and 40s for northern Minnesota.

This will set us up for a chilly night. Southern Minnesota should avoid frost, but northern Minnesota will see widespread 30s and some areas of frost.
