Update on Sunday/Sunday evening rain chances; no hot days this week

The new runs of the forecast models have shifted the rain chances a bit.

Areas of rain (and possibly a few embedded thunderstorms) will continue to move through portions of south-central and southeastern Minnesota late this Sunday morning and Sunday afternoon. Another batch of rain (with embedded thunderstorms possible) is expected to move into southwestern Minnesota by around mid-afternoon then spread eastward through the late afternoon and evening hours. Some spots in far southern Minnesota could see more than one inch of rain through Sunday evening.

Far northern Minnesota will have some areas of rain Sunday afternoon and evening. A few showers and an isolated thunderstorm could also pop up elsewhere in Minnesota plus western Wisconsin Sunday afternoon and evening. There’s a chance of a passing shower in the metro area this Sunday afternoon, then Twin Cities metro area shower chances will increase from Sunday evening into the overnight hours, with an isolated thunderstorm possible.

Mainly dry Monday

Southeastern and far northeastern Minnesota could see a lingering shower early Monday morning, then most of Minnesota plus western Wisconsin will have many dry hours. A few scattered showers could spread into west-central Minnesota late Monday afternoon and Monday evening.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s North American Mesoscale forecast model shows the potential rain pattern from 5 a.m. Monday to 10 p.m. Monday:

NOAA’s High-Resolution Rapid-Refresh (HRRR) forecast model shows a similar pattern for Monday morning, but it spreads more numerous showers into western Minnesota late on Monday:

It still looks mostly dry in the Twin Cities during the daylight hours of Monday plus much of Tuesday, then shower and thunderstorm chances ramp up Tuesday night into Wednesday.

Temperature trends

Most of Minnesota and western Wisconsin will have Sunday afternoon highs in the upper 60s to lower 70s.

Monday highs will be in the 60s in many locations, With lower 70s from the Twin Cities metro area into south-central and southeastern Minnesota:

We aren’t expecting any big temperature swings through the rest of the week. Twin Cities metro area highs are projected to reach the lower 70s on Tuesday, then around 70 Wednesday, followed by lower 70s for Thursday and Friday.

The record Twin Cities high temperature for today is 99 degrees, set last year. The coldest June 5 high temp in Twin Cities weather records is 50 degrees, set in 1935.
