Thunderstorm chances increase Sun. night into Mon. AM; severe weather is possible

Parts of northwestern Minnesota saw strong to severe thunderstorms late Sunday afternoon. Those storms will spread eastward Sunday evening. Additional scattered strong to severe thunderstorms could develop elsewhere in Minnesota and western Wisconsin Sunday evening, but the main event in most areas will be later Sunday night and Monday morning.

Computer models show an organized batch of thunderstorms moving into western Minnesota after midnight Sunday night, then gradually spreading across the remainder of Minnesota and parts of western Wisconsin during the late overnight hours and Monday morning. Some of those thunderstorms could be severe.

Severe weather outlook Sunday night into Monday morning

The Storm Prediction Center of the National Weather Service shows a slight risk (yellow) of severe weather Sunday evening into Monday morning for much of Minnesota, with a marginal risk (dark green) of severe weather in eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin:

Slight risk means that scattered severe thunderstorms are possible, marginal risk means that an isolated severe thunderstorm is possible. The explanation in the graphic of storm timing and the potential severe weather hazards is from the NWS Twin Cities office.

Temperature trends

Our average June 13 high temp is 79 degrees in the Twin Cities. Metro area highs are expected to reach the lower 80s on Monday. Highs will range from lower 90s in far southwestern Minnesota to 60s near Lake Superior Monday afternoon:

A warm front will deliver highs in the 90s to much of southern and central Minnesota plus western Wisconsin on Tuesday:

It’ll feel steamy, with dew points in the upper 60s in many areas:

Twin Cities metro area highs are projected to reach the mid to upper 90s on Tuesday, then retreat to around 80 on Wednesday, followed by lower 80s Thursday and upper 80s on Friday.

We could see above normal temps next weekend into the start of the following week. The NWS Climate Prediction Center shows a tendency for above-normal temperatures in the upper Midwest from June 18 through June 22:
