Wintry mix spreads across Minnesota

We had a breezy Sunday, with very comfortable dew points. It was nice to have the windows of the house open, with no need to run the air conditioner.

The Sunday high temp at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport was 76 degrees. That’s 6 degrees shy of our average June 26 high, but I’ll bet many people enjoyed the break from the steamy weather that we saw last week. 

Winds will be lighter on Monday. Highs will reach the 80s across much of Minnesota, with mainly 70s in north-central and northeastern Minnesota plus western Wisconsin:

Monday afternoon dew points will be in the comfortable upper 40s to lower 50s:

Dew points are expected to reach the upper 50s in some areas Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by dew points in the sticky 60s on Thursday.

Back to forecast high temps, Twin Cities metro area highs are projected to reach the lower 80s on Monday, followed by mid 80s Tuesday, then around 90 on Wednesday and Thursday. Metro area highs retreat to around 80 on Friday. We could see highs in the lower 80s next weekend.

Temps might be a bit warmer than normal for July Fourth and the following few days. The NWS Climate Prediction Center shows a tendency for above-normal temps in central and southern Minnesota plus west-central Wisconsin from July 4 through July 10:

Even if temps end up being near normal during that period, I don’t expect many complaints. Our average highs are very comfortable this time of year.

Scattered showers will move across portions of northeastern Minnesota this Sunday evening. An isolated shower is possible elsewhere in northern Minnesota and in far northwestern Wisconsin.  North-central and northeastern Minnesota could see a few scattered showers and an isolated t-storm Monday afternoon and evening.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible in Minnesota and western Wisconsin on Tuesday.  The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s North American Mesoscale (NAM) forecast model shows the potential rain pattern from 4 a.m. Tuesday to 10 p.m. Tuesday:

Pay more attention to the patchy nature of the rain rather than the exact location of the rain at any point in time. Our Tuesday rain potential will be clearer by Monday afternoon.

An additional batch of showers and thunderstorms is possible Wednesday night and Thursday….check forecast updates this week.

The last time that the high temp at MSP airport was in the 70s was 11 days ago; on June 15.
