Showers and storms sweeping northeast; humidity building
A long line of thunderstorms, trailed by a broad area of rain, has been speeding northeast across Minnesota as Independence Day gets underway.
Heat and humidity building
July heat and humidity will build through the Fourth of July holiday. Look for afternoon high temperatures from the 70s in the north to near 90 southwest, but much cooler near Lake Superior. Most of the state should have highs in the 80s.
The rain should end across the Twin Cities area by early afternoon. Then look for highs in the mid to upper 80s with the dew point approaching a swampy 70.

Potential for redevelopment
How the thunderstorm situation will play out the rest of the day is a bit of a question mark. The morning storms and rain will stabilize the atmosphere at least temporarily. But popup thunderstorms with the heating of the day, fueled by the elevated dew points, are likely, mainly north of the Twin Cities area. As posted by the Storm Prediction Center, some storms could become severe. The yellow area is for a slight risk (level 2 of 5) for severe weather. The dark green is a lesser marginal risk. Any storms that develop should fade away by fireworks time, except maybe lingering locally in the Arrowhead.
Unsettled week
Much of the upcoming week will bring typical July weather: heat and humidity, along with widely scattered showers and thunderstorms most days. But the risk of severe weather will shift southward. The slight risk of severe storms on Tuesday and Tuesday night will stretch from Montana to Maryland. Note that it does include much of southern Minnesota.
More of the same for Wednesday
For Wednesday and Wednesday night, the slight risk is posted from Nebraska and just about all of Iowa to North Carolina.
Typical July heat
Statewide high temperatures should be mainly in the 80s for most of Minnesota for much of the upcoming week. Exceptions will be cooler highs in the 70s in the northeast and some toasty low 90s in the southwest.
Heating up next weekend
If highs in the 80s aren’t quite enough for you, next Sunday might just be the ticket with central and southern Minnesota maybe heating into the low 90s.
