Wintry mix spreads across Minnesota

Parts of Minnesota and western Wisconsin saw thunderstorms and downpours at times Sunday afternoon. Some areas had little or no rain. We often see these scattered rain patterns in July.

Some additional areas of scattered thunderstorms are expected in Minnesota and western Wisconsin Sunday evening. A few severe thunderstorms are also possible.

The NWS Storm Prediction Center shows a slight risk (shaded yellow) of severe weather Sunday evening and overnight Sunday night for much of Minnesota and parts of west-central and northwestern Wisconsin:

The SPC slight risk designation indicates that scattered severe thunderstorms are possible. The northern half of the Twin Cities metro area is included in the slight risk severe weather category Sunday evening, while the south metro and southern Minnesota have a marginal risk of severe weather and could see an isolated severe thunderstorm.

Minnesota and western Wisconsin will have a chance of occasional scattered showers and a passing thunderstorm on Monday, along with gusty winds.

Our average Twin Cities high temp is 84 degrees this time of year. Metro area highs will be mainly in the lower 80s on Monday. Most of southern Minnesota and western Wisconsin will top out in the 80s Monday afternoon, with 70s in northern Minnesota:

Monday afternoon wind gusts will be over 20 mph in eastern Minnesota and between 25 and 30 mph in the west:

Forecast gusts are in knots, with 22 knots equal to 25.3 mph.

Back to temperatures, Twin Cities metro area highs are projected to reach the lower 80s on Tuesday, followed by mid 80s Wednesday, then around 90 on Thursday and lower 90s on Friday.

Above-normal temperatures may linger through next weekend and into the following week. The NWS Climate Prediction Center shows a strong signal for above-normal temps in the upper Midwest from July 16 through July 20:

On average, July is the sunniest month of the year in the Twin Cities, with 72% of possible sunshine. November is on average our cloudiest month of the year in the Twin Cities, with just 39% of possible sunshine.
