Sunday evening thunderstorms northwest corner; very hot Monday with scattered storms north
Sunday’s heat and humidity generated a scattering of showers and thunderstorms in western Wisconsin. An outflowing cold pool from those storms provided a boundary along which heavy rain showers developed over the east side of the Twin Cities metro area. The St. Paul Saints home baseball game had a lengthy rain delay and was then cancelled, apparently due to wet field conditions.
More of the Twin Cities area could use the rain, but no such luck. A few isolated showers might cross the area early this evening.
The serious heat and humidity this Sunday afternoon have been in northwestern Minnesota. Temperatures climbed into the 90s with dew points well into the 70s in that part of the state. Add in a disturbance aloft, and strong thunderstorms are likely in the northwestern corner into Sunday evening. The Storm Prediction Center has expanded its marginal (dark green, level 1 of 5) risk farther to the south to include a larger area near North Dakota.

Monday’s heat and humidity are sure to get your attention. High temperatures should be in the 90s just about statewide across Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Parts of west central Minnesota such as around Wheaton and Ortonville could touch 100 degrees.
The Twin Cities will have a high near 97 with dew points well into the 60s and a southwest wind of 10-20 mph.
Chances of storms, possibly severe
Unsettled weather will return on Monday and Tuesday. Scattered showers and storms are likely across northern Minnesota on Monday. By Monday night, scattered thunderstorms will spread from the Dakotas eastward across Minnesota. A marginal (dark green, level 1 of 5) risk of severe weather has been posted across much of northern Minnesota for Monday. The light green represents possible non-severe thunderstorms.
The chances of thunderstorms will increase eastward later Monday night and for Tuesday. A slight (yellow, level 2 of 5) risk will cover central to east central Minnesota and most of Wisconsin for the 24 hours beginning at 7 a.m. on Tuesday. The Twin Cities are included in that slight risk.
Wednesday will be the most comfortable day for the upcoming week
A cold front will cool the state closer to normal for Wednesday.
Heat builds again after Wednesday
Then expect the heat to ramp up again later in the week. Temperatures should re-heat slowly later in the week. Long range models are forecasting persistent hot weather for not only Minnesota and the whole Upper Midwest, but for just about the entire country as well.
Stray showers are possible later in the week, but probably not the rain we need.
