Gorgeous Friday; hotter weekend; strong storms possible Sunday

Friday will be a day to enjoy our great outdoors: abundant sunshine with comfortable summer temperatures with little mugginess. Afternoon high temperatures will be in the 70s for most of Minnesota with some spots touching the low 80s. The Twin Cities will have a high around 81, which is a couple degrees below average, and dew points in the pleasant mid-50s.

Toasty weekend

The warmup will rev up on Saturday with highs mostly in the 80s. The Twin Cities should heat to about 88 with a minor increase in the dew point. Saturday will be the most promising day of the weekend for outdoor activities around the state as Minnesota should remain just about rain-free.

Sunday will be rather hot and increasingly humid. The Twin Cities might touch 90 with dew points climbing up the 60s. Scattered thunderstorms will erupt here and there across Minnesota, mainly in the afternoon and evening.

Serious heat next week

A cold front will bring temperatures back down to near normal on Monday with highs from the mid-70s to mid-80s likely. Then the thermal engine will return to action and bring lots of high temperatures well into the 80s and 90s. The early outlook for the Twin Cities is for highs to climb into the upper 90s on Wednesday.

Continued heat in August

The 6-10 day temperature outlook for Aug. 3-7 (next Wednesday though Sunday) calls for the high likelihood of hotter than normal temperatures for a huge area of the central to eastern expanses of the country. Arizona might get some relief from their recent scorching weather.

No drought-busting rains likely soon

Rain is certainly needed in parts of the state including of the Twin Cities area. The weekly drought monitor indicates that much of the central and southern Twin Cities metro area continues in a severe drought (orange).

Unfortunately, our few chances for rain over the next week appear to be few and scattered. Showers and thunderstorms might pop up on a few days but will be hit-and-miss. No widespread soakers are likely for the parched areas. Only parts of eastern Minnesota, mainly in the northeast, have some likelihood for getting an inch or more of rain during the next week.
