A cooler and windy Wednesday can be expected. We’ll have partly cloudy skies. It’ll be even cooler Thursday with widespread 40s south and 30s north early Thursday with highs just in the 50s and 60s.
Recap of Tuesday’s heat
It was very hot for this late in the season. The Twin Cities had our first temperature 90 degrees or greater since Aug. 5, oddly enough. This makes 18 for this season; 13 is normal.
The Twin Cities topped out at 92 and broke the record of 91 set back in 1931. That’s more than two standard deviations above normal for the date.
Several places hit 100 as close as Spencer, Iowa, just south of the Minnesota-Iowa border. On the Minnesota side of the border, Worthington and New Ulm were a couple of spots that reached 97 degrees.

Cooler, windy Wednesday
Of course, weather that warm can’t last long this time of year. Behind the cool front, it’s much cooler early Wednesday morning. Afternoon high temperatures will be in the 50s north and 60s south.
With the cooler air still settling in, we’ll have winds from the northwest at 10-20 mph with gusts up to 20 to 30 mph.
Wednesday night will bring some of the coolest temperatures we’ve seen this season, including the first night below 50 degrees in the Twin Cities. Southern Minnesota will see widespread 40s while northeastern Minnesota will see 30s.
Friday will bring showers with the next system and a slight warm up for Saturday.
