Unusually frigid air will grip Minnesota Monday and Tuesday with highs only in the 30s to low 40s. Wind chills will be in the 20s and teens. Temperatures warm dramatically by the end of the week.
Monday temps 20 degrees below normal
Monday will be unusually cold for mid-October with temperatures running 15 to 25 degrees below normal.
Gusty north winds at 10-20 mph will keep wind chill values in the 20s and even teens during the day Monday. Wind gusts will be in the 20-30 mph range.
Overnight Monday night temperatures will dip to our coldest readings yet this season, into the 20s and teens.

Winds will start to become lighter but the wind chill factor will be in the teens statewide early Tuesday.
One extreme to the next
Just six days ago it was 80 degrees (20 degrees above normal) in the Twin Cities. Monday’s temps will be in the 30s — 20 degrees below normal. This weekend, we’ll be back to highs 20 degrees above normal.
The culprit to this pattern is an usually deep upper-level low of cold air aloft that has been nearly stagnant. It’s opened the flood gates to more cold coming from northern Canada. As it moves east, an usually large ridge that’s built in behind it will move into Minnesota.
High temperatures by Friday will see 60s return to southern Minnesota and we’ll likely see highs in the 70s by Saturday and Sunday again.
