Warming nicely through the weekend; storms possible late Sunday

Colder air from Manitoba will hold our temperatures down next week

This week’s warmup is picking up steam. High temperatures Thursday will be in the 50s for much of Minnesota while the northeast lingers in the upper 40s and western Minnesota warms into the low to mid 60s. Highs clouds are sliding in from the northwest to filter the sunshine.

The Twin Cities will see a high near 57 degrees, very close to the average high of 56 for this date. Winds will be pleasantly light.

Friday will be a mild day. The Twin Cities should warm into the mid 60s.

Warm weekend

The weekend looks Septemberish. Temperatures will run well above normal. The Twin Cities should enjoy a high around 70 degrees on Saturday and probably about 74 on Sunday.

Showers, storms late Sunday into Monday

Showers and thunderstorms are likely to approach from the west on Sunday and increase in coverage late in the day as a deepening low pressure system builds across the Northern High Plains and into the Upper Midwest.

Some storms could be strong or even marginally severe in southern Minnesota Sunday evening.

Significant rain?

Showers will continue into Monday on the back side of that weather system. Many parts of Minnesota could receive useful rainfalls during the Sunday-Monday period.

Forecast models call for possibly an inch or more of rain in some areas, but those rainfall models have often been overly optimistic this year.

A much colder northwest flow from Manitoba will hold our temperatures down next week. Monday will be cooler than the weekend, but still warmer than normal. The core of the Canadian air should make a deeper push on Tuesday.
