Wind chills will remain in the single digits Friday in eastern Minnesota and subzero northwest. We’ll see snow showers develop Friday night with some light accumulation ahead of even colder air Saturday into Saturday night. Wind chills will stay subzero Saturday statewide.
The first of two cold blasts
Colder air has settled into Minnesota Friday. It’s just the first of two rounds of cold air for the weekend. Highs will only be in the teens Friday to near 20 in southern Minnesota.

Northwest winds at 10-20 mph will keep wind chills in the single digits and even below zero in northwest Minnesota even in the afternoon.

The air is coming directly from the arctic regions of northwest Canada and northern Alaska. Current modeled trajectories of lower and mid-level air flow shows this well.

Lake effect snows and more snow showers
The focus for lake-effect snow showers has been the south shore of Lake Superior. Over two feet has fallen so far around Ironwood, Mich.

A clipper diving out of Canada will bring more light snow to Minnesota, statewide overnight Friday night. Totals will be relatively light south but 1 to 2 inches is possible in parts of northern Minnesota.

Colder Saturday, warmer Sunday afternoon
High temperatures will again remain in the teens Saturday but with slightly higher wind speeds. This will make for wind chills mainly subzero through the day Saturday and causing some blowing and drifting of snow.

Our coldest temperatures will come early Sunday morning with lows in the single digits and even a few subzero readings.

We’ll warm up into the 20s by Sunday afternoon.

Next week should bring several days above freezing but there’s also the possibility of a Thanksgiving system that could bring rain and snow. The models differ greatly on this system but it’s something to watch.
