Snow showers develop and fill in Monday afternoon for much of Minnesota into overnight. Tuesday will be colder with wind chills ranging from 10 below zero east to 30 below zero west. More snow develops Wednesday.

Frigid morning lows and continued chilly Monday

It was a cold morning early Monday with most places reporting low temperatures below zero. Expect a chilly day with below normal temperatures ranging from the teens to single digits but this may be our warmest day for a week.

Snow will develop and fill in across much of Minnesota from midday into the afternoon Monday. Most of the snow will wrap up by midnight but linger into the arrowhead region until early Tuesday morning.

Snowfall amounts will be about 1 or 2 inches (or less) in southeastern and central Minnesota with some higher amounts north and especially along the North Shore into the arrowhead where 3 to 5 inches could accumulate.

Colder Tuesday, more snow Wednesday then more cold

Tuesday will be colder with morning lows near 10 below zero in western Minnesota to barely above zero in the Twin Cities. Wind chills will be in the 20s below zero in western Minnesota.

The next storm system brings snow Wednesday morning into Thursday night. More significant accumulations are possible and blowing snow will be an issue after the snow stops on Friday.

While it’s still a bit early, with a high amount of uncertainty, snowfall will add up more quickly with the colder temperatures. We’ll be talking about snow-to-liquid ratios of 15:1 or 20:1 or even higher. This means the snow will be light, fluffy and easily blown around.

Friday morning will bring our worst wind chills yet as gusty winds blow the snow and combine with well below zero temperatures. Wind chill values will be in the 30s and even 40s below zero.
