Light snow Sunday; Becoming much milder this week

Our recent brutal winds have finally diminished after three dangerous days. Tempeatures will remain cold for Christmas Day. Afternoon highs will be mainly in the single digits above zero. The Twin Cities should have a high around 8.

By the way, in case you think it has been cold recently, the coldest official Twin Cities temperature this past week has been just 12 below on Friday. That’s a far cry from the Twin Cities record low for Christmas Day of 39 below set in 1879.

As you will notice in the graphic below, temperatures will moderate considerably during the upcoming week.

You will also notice that a bit of Christmas snow is forecast for much of western, central and southern Minnesota.

Alberta Clipper for Christmas

An Alberta clipper weather system is racing from the Canadian Prairies, across the Dakotas and into Minnesota this Christmas Sunday. Cold, fluffy snow will dive southeastward across much of the state beginning during the latter half of the morning. Snow should beginning falling in Alexandria around noon, In St. Cloud and Redwood Falls in early afternoon, and in the Twin Cities and Mankato during mid to late afternoon.

A winter weather advisory has been posted for west central and southwestern Minnesota from Sunday afternoon into the evening for generally 2 to 5 inches of snow. Parts of west central Minnesota could get close to 6 or 7 inches locally. Accumulations will be lighter farther north and east. The Twin Cities could pick up 1 to 3 inches, with the most in the southwest metro, as the system weakens as it approaches.

Turning much milder as we head toward 2023

Monday will be a few degrees warmer.  The Twin Cities might get to around 11.

Then some serious thermal moderation will come our way for the rest of the upcoming week. Many high temperatures will be in the mid to upper 30s from Wednesday into next weekend. A few spots might touch 40.

Blizzard update for Buffalo, NY

The Buffalo, NY airport measured a storm total of 43 inches up to this morning with the snowfall just about over but the wind still causing blowing snow. The airport is closed today for the third consecutive day. It is scheduled to reopen at 11:00 a.m. EST on Monday. Airlines must have quite a backlog of passengers to rebook.
