Light snow Sunday night; Moderating temperatures this week

Christmas Day has been a rather cold one, but at least most of the recent brutal wind went away. The Twin Cities had a morning low of 4 below. By comparison, the recod low temperature for the Twin Cities for Christmas Day is 39 below, set in 1879.

Afternoon temperatures have risen only into the positive single digits over most of the state while some northern spots have remained slightly subzero.

Alberta Clipper brings fresh snow

An Alberta clipper weather system with light, fluffy snow is racing southeastward across Minnesota this Sunday. A winter weather advisory has been posted for well into Sunday night for large parts of western and southern Minnesota.

Snowfall accumulations are likely to be generally 3 to 5 inches in the advisory area, although some local areas such as around Madison and Granite Falls could get a bit more.

Accumulations will be much lighter farther north and east. The Twin Cities will probably get an inch or two overnight.

Much milder with some melting this week

Monday will be a few degrees warmer.  The Twin Cities might make double digits around 10 degrees.

Then the warm advection will kick in. High temperatures should be mainly in the 20s north and 30s south for the Wednesday through next Sunday period. A few low 40s might be possible, as well.

Blizzard update for Buffalo, New York

Blizzard conditions have abated in the Buffalo, NY area, but more periods of snow along with blowing and drifting are likely Sunday night. The Buffalo airport has posted that it will be closed for a fourth consecutive day on Monday. It is now scheduled to reopen late Tuesday morning.
