Temps fall, winds rise Thursday; weekend warmup coming
Thursday night brings some of the week's coldest temps
The cold air strikes again after its brief retreat. This time it’s only sticking around for about 36 hours. Gusty northwest winds will drop temperatures Thursday. Thursday night will be well below zero statewide.
Frigid air makes a brief return visit
The polar air made a nice retreat the last couple of days but a quick moving disturbance is helping to draw that cold air back down briefly Thursday into Friday. Temperatures will drop through the day Thursday.
In addition gusty northwest winds will blow as the cold air dives south again across Minnesota.
That wind, combined with falling temps will create wind chills in the teens below zero by evening in southern Minnesota and in the 30s below zero northwest.
Low temperatures Thursday night into early Friday will be some of the coldest of this week, falling into the teens below zero in southern Minnesota and 20s below zero north. Some of the typical cold spots in northeast Minnesota will likely see some 30s below zero.
Temps 40-50 degrees warmer this weekend
Talk about temperature whiplash. We’ll go from the deep freeze to above freezing for parts of southern Minnesota by Saturday afternoon. In the span of less than 36 hours temperatures will have warmed about 40 to 50 degrees!
The mild air sticks around into next week. We’ll have some relatively minor precipitation chances with some snow showers north Sunday and rain and snow showers possible Monday across the state. Neither look significant.
