Back to the 30s Sunday afternoon; Rain and snow return late Tuesday into Wednesday

Closing in on seventh-snowiest snow season in the Twin Cities

Yes, this morning was cold enough for me!

The Twin Cities Sunday morning low temperature (measured at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport) was 7 degrees. The average Twin Cities low temp is 26 degrees this time of year. The average Twin Cities low temp is 8 degrees in mid-January.

Temperatures will recover nicely Sunday afternoon, with highs in the 30s expected across most of Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Some spots in far northwestern Minnesota could see highs in the upper 20s.

Southwesterly winds will gust over 30 mph at times Sunday afternoon. Parts of southwestern Minnesota could see a few gusts over 40 mph, and blowing snow will be possible in open areas.

Next rain/snow chance

Computer models show an area of precipitation spreading into Minnesota and Wisconsin Tuesday afternoon and then lingering Tuesday night into early Wednesday.

It may be rain or a rain/snow mix in southern Minnesota, the Twin Cities metro area and west-central Wisconsin, with mainly snow over central and northern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s North American Mesoscale (NAM) forecast model shows the potential precipitation pattern from 10 a.m. Tuesday to 4 p.m. Wednesday:

Closing in on seventh-snowiest

The official 2022-2023 Twin Cities snow season total (measured at MSP airport) is 81.2 inches.

That puts the current snow season in the eighth-snowiest position in Twin Cities weather records:
