A cool and windy Sunday; Periods of rain, with flakes in some areas

If you need some sunshine today, head west.

The western third of Minnesota will have quite a bit of Sunday sunshine. Eastern Minnesota and much of Wisconsin will have a lot of clouds, as moisture continues to rotate around a low pressure system that’s parked over the Great Lakes.

Rain and snow outlook

Much of southeastern Minnesota and west-central Wisconsin were reporting either rain or a rain/snow mix at 8 a.m. Sunday. That mix will transition to mainly rain by afternoon and into Sunday evening.

• The Twin Cities metro area can expect periods of rain this morning, with a few stray flakes possible, followed by a chance of scattered rain showers Sunday afternoon/early evening.

• There’ll be a mix of rain and snow in northeastern Minnesota today, with generally one inch or less of additional snow possible. Some of higher elevations could see a bit more snow than that.

• It’ll be mainly snow in northwestern Wisconsin this morning, then a transition to a rain/snow mix is expected Sunday afternoon.

A winter weather advisory continues until 1 p.m. Sunday for Douglas and Bayfield counties of northwestern Wisconsin.  Steady snow continues in north-central Wisconsin, where there’s a winter storm warning today through Monday morning in Ashland and Iron Counties:

There’s a wind advisory today through Monday along and near the North Shore of Lake Superior and down through Carlton county.

Wind gusts up to 40 mph are possible in the Twin Cities metro area.

Another cool day

Sunday highs will be in the 50s in western Minnesota, with mainly 40s in eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin:

Some spots in the Twin Cities metro area could touch 50 degrees later this afternoon. The average Twin Cities high temperature is 63 degrees this time of year.
