Periods of rain/thunderstorms Saturday evening; Sunday rain chances highest to the north

Above normal temps this coming week

Unsettled weather continues into Saturday evening, but Sunday is looking a bit drier.

Periods of rain and embedded thunderstorms will continue in much of Minnesota and western Wisconsin Saturday evening. The rain may linger overnight in parts of northern Minnesota.

An isolated severe thunderstorm is possible Saturday evening from the southern half of the Twin Cities metro area through southern Minnesota and portions of Wisconsin, per the latest severe weather outlook from the NWS Storm Prediction Center:

6:35 p.m. Saturday Update

Severe weather has moved a bit north of the SPC severe weather risk area Saturday evening. There was a confirmed tornado near Prinsburg, in Kandiyohi County, at 6:34 p.m. Saturday.

There were several additional tornado reports Saturday evening in Minnesota, including one near Maynard, one near Granite Falls, one north of Renville and another near Clara City.

Be aware that additional severe weather may develop Saturday evening in parts of central and west-central Minnesota plus southern Minnesota and portions of Wisconsin. _______________________________________________________________________________________________

Areas of fog will linger in parts of northeastern Minnesota Saturday evening and into Sunday morning. Areas of fog will also develop elsewhere in Minnesota and western Wisconsin later Saturday night and linger into Sunday morning.

Sunday rain chances

The best chance of rain during the daylight hours of Sunday will be in northern Minnesota. A few scattered showers and an isolated thunderstorm could also develop elsewhere in Minnesota and western Wisconsin, especially late Sunday afternoon and Sunday evening.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s North American Mesoscale (NAM) forecast model shows the potential rain pattern from 4 a.m. Sunday to 11 p.m. Sunday:

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible on Monday, then Tuesday and Wednesday look mainly dry, with just an isolated shower chance.

The average Twin Cities high temperature is 66 degrees on May 7. Sunday highs are expected to reach the mid to upper 70s in the Twin Cities metro area.

Much of southern and central Minnesota and western Wisconsin will see Sunday highs in the 70s:

Northern Minnesota and far northwestern Wisconsin will have Sunday afternoon highs in the 60s and 50s, with a few upper 40s possible near Lake Superior.

Twin Cities metro area highs are projected to reach the lower 70s on Monday, followed by mid 70s Tuesday then upper 70s Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

No chilly temps are in sight. The NWS Climate Prediction Center show a strong tendency for above-normal temps from May 12 through May 16:
