Prompts winter weather advisories as cold air moves in Friday night

Heavy rain lingers in southeastern Minnesota through morning and will dissipate midday. More spotty storms are possible later into Thursday night. Some storms could be strong in southwestern Minnesota.

Heavy rainfall overnight into early Thursday

Lots of rain fell across portions of southwestern and south-central Minnesota into early Thursday. Radar estimates show 2 to 5 inches or more fell in some places.

A flash flood warning is posted for Freeborn and Waseca counties through noon Thursday.

More than 5 inches of rain fell in portions of the area within the warning through 9:30 a.m. Thursday, according to radar estimates.

Rain, thunderstorms possible into early Sunday

We’ll have lingering scattered showers and thunder for portions of southern Minnesota  through Thursday morning, dissipating midday. A mix of clouds and sun in the afternoon will allow temperatures to warm. Thunderstorms are possible later in the afternoon and evening.

High temperatures will be well into the 70s for most of the state but areas where cloud “debris” lingers may remain a bit cooler.

There’s a marginal risk (level 1 of 5) for some severe weather in far southwestern Minnesota later Thursday with a greater risk farther south and west into the plains.

Isolated and spotty thunderstorms will be possible mainly on Friday with better chances again Friday night into Saturday. The bulk of the persistent and heavier rain looks to be in southern and southwestern Minnesota.

We should see skies clear through the day Sunday with a stretch of sunny, warm days early next week as high pressure settles into the Upper Midwest.
