Wednesday is starting out quietly with just some patchy dense fog in the north. Around sunrise, visibilities are down to a quarter of a mile or less in Grand Rapids, Hibbing, Ely and Cook.
Expect comfortable temperatures for the rest of this week. Highs on Wednesday should range from the upper 60s to mid 70s in the northwest and the mid 80s in the southeast. The Twin Cities will have a high near 84 with rather low dew points.
Smoke lingers on
Canadian wildfire smoke will be most noticeable across central Minnesota Wednesday morning. The air quality forecast for Wednesday from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is for smoke conditions to be unhealthy for sensitive groups for portions of central Minnesota. Smoke is expected to diminish Wednesday afternoon.
Chances of storms
The cold front that triggered scattered strong to severe thunderstorms across northern Minnesota on Tuesday has sagged southward. Expect a similar scattering of thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon and evening across central Minnesota. Some storms could become strong. Isolated severe storms will be possible, including in and near the Twin Cities. The dark green is a marginal risk (level 1 of 5) of severe weather from northeastern South Dakota to Upper Michigan.
While some storms might linger into early Thursday, most of the day will be pleasant.
Better chances of rain Thursday night
A stronger atmospheric ripple will bring a better chance of showers and storms Thursday night and again with the heating of Friday. August rains tend not to be very reliable and can’t be trusted to break a drought.
