Frigid temperatures this weekend prompt cold weather advisories

This is incredibly hot weather for early September. 

The average Twin Cities high temperature is 77 degrees this time of year. Most of the metro area will top out in the upper 90s Sunday afternoon and a few spots in the metro could touch 100 degrees. The warmest Sept. 3 high temp in Twin Cities weather records is 97 degrees, set in 1925.

Much of southern and central Minnesota, plus west-central Wisconsin, will see Sunday highs in the upper 90s. A few spots in southern Minnesota could reach triple-digit high temps.

Roughly the northern third of Minnesota will see Sunday highs ranging from lower 90s to upper 80s, but some spots in Cook County that are close to Lake Superior will have lower 80s.

Monday high temps will be in the upper 90s in southern and central Minnesota and in west-central Wisconsin:

Highs in the upper 80s to lower 90s are expected across much of far northern Minnesota on Labor Day, with some 70s up along the North Shore of Lake Superior.

Tuesday will be much cooler to the northwest, with heat lingering in the metro area and in southern Minnesota and west-central Wisconsin:

After highs in the lower and middle 90s on Tuesday, the Twin Cities metro area will see much cooler temps. Metro area highs are projected to be in the mid 70s on Wednesday and Thursday, followed by lower 80s on Friday.

A heat advisory continues today through 5 p.m. Tuesday for the Twin Cities metro area and today through 6 p.m. Tuesday for several southeastern Minnesota counties along the Mississippi River.

Heat advisories run from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m this Sunday for additional Minnesota and western Wisconsin counties.

Parts of northwestern Minnesota could see a passing shower or thunderstorm Monday afternoon and evening. 

A better chance of showers and thunderstorms moves into Minnesota Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday night.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s North American Mesoscale (NAM) forecast model shows the potential rain pattern from 5 a.m. Tuesday to 6 p.m. Tuesday:

NOAA’s FV3 forecast model shows a somewhat similar rain pattern, but in addition it moves a rain chance into the Twin Cities metro area and southeastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin Tuesday afternoon & evening:
