Widespread rains from Thursday into Friday night took the edge off the drought in southern and central Minnesota. Rainfalls of 1 to 3 inches certainly were more than welcome. The official Twin Cities reading from the international airport was 1.61 inches. My rain gauge in Minneapolis was proud to report 2.5 inches. St. Paul’s Downtown Airport got 1.8 inches. In the west metro, the National Weather Service office in Chanhassen measured 1.8 inches.
Varied amounts fell across southern Minnesota. Redwood Falls got almost 2 inches and Northfield was soaked with 3.5 inches, but Rochester came up shorter with 1.2 inches.
Rainfall amounts tapered off farther north. St. Cloud got 1.5 inches, Brainerd half an inch, Duluth a little more than a tenth of an inch, and no rain at all for International Falls.

Rain continues this morning from southern Wisconsin south through Chicago and northern Indiana.
Mostly dry the rest of the weekend
Saturday will be mostly cloudy and cool with highs in the upper 40s to mid 50s. The Twin Cities will have a high near 54. Winds have slackened and should remain generally less than 20 mph from the north. Isolated afternoon sprinkles are possible.
Pleasant Sunday and early next week
Dry high pressure from Manitoba will build into Minnesota on Sunday and bring us partly sunny skies. Temperatures should be a bit warmer with highs mainly in the 50s statewide.
Next week
Monday and Tuesday will be dry days, as well. A disturbance from the northwest could bring some showers on Wednesday and maybe Thursday.
Ahead of the showers, Wednesday might be the warmest day of next week.
