December 2023 was the warmest December on record for Minnesota. And it was memorable for how wet it was, even as the state picked up very little snow.
Little has changed as we slide into January 2024. Temperatures have dipped a bit closer to normal, but still on the mild side. Snow chances this week are minimal.
Unsafe ice
Please remember that lake ice has been slow to develop this winter. What ice cover is on ponds and lakes is likely thinner than normal and might have been weakened by recent rain.

New Year’s Day
Low clouds will be slow to clear from west to east on New Year’s Day. High temperatures will run warmer than normal, in the upper 20s to low 30s. The Twin Cities should see a high around 31 with a light southwest breeze. Clouds will likely move out late in the day.
Milder Tuesday
Tuesday will probably be the mildest day of the week. Look for highs from the upper 20s to mid 30s.
Mostly snow-free week
Snow chances this week appear minimal. Flurries are possible Tuesday night. Later in the week there is a chance of light snow about Friday or next weekend. Temperatures will remain on the mild side for mid-winter.

Better snow chances next week
The weather pattern looks like it might look more normal next week. Early next week we could be on the north edge of a major storm passing well to our south.
