Portions of Minnesota could double their seasonal snowfall by Sunday

Monday will be chilly with briefly warmer temperatures returning Tuesday. A colder pattern sets in midweek into the weekend with the potential for two snowfalls.

Chilly Monday then briefly milder Tuesday 

Monday will remain chilly with highs ranging from the low 40s in western Minnesota to near freezing in northeast Minnesota. While chilly, those temperatures are actually just about two to five degrees colder than normal in eastern Minnesota. A few snow showers are possible in northeast Minnesota later in the day.

Overnight temperatures will remain nearly steady as briefly warmer air moves in. Highs Tuesday will be briefly above normal in the low 50s, 40s and 30s. We’ll see a mix of clouds and sunshine and some flurries.

It will also be windy Tuesday in the wake of a cold front that will drop temperatures by Wednesday.

Colder pattern returns with snow potential 

Colder air sets back in for midweek into the weekend with highs mostly in the 20s and 30s across the state.

The cold will be setting the stage for potential snow as the pattern also becomes more active. Not one, but potentially two or three systems could bring snow Thursday into Sunday. The first system will develop snow Thursday across much of the state into early Friday.

Our forecast models are in general agreement of a swath of at least a few inches for most of central and southern Minnesota, including the Twin cities.

Another round (or two) of snow is possible over the weekend into early next week. By Sunday, temperatures may be just warm enough where a mix of rain and snow may be possible, complicating snowfall forecasts.
