More than 20 people were arrested in Minneapolis Wednesday at a protest of

 Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to Congress

Protesters gathered outside U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar’s office in downtown to protest Netanyahu’s speech and Klobuchar’s attendance. Organizers of the demonstration said hundreds of people attended the rally and some proceeded to block the I-35W ramp at Washington Ave. S.

According to the State Patrol, troopers and other law enforcement officers were called to the scene around 4:30 p.m. A patrol spokesperson says protesters ignored commands to leave the roadway.

Officers cited and released 23 people on the scene. The State Patrol says the area was cleared just after 7 p.m.

It was one of several protests around the country in response to Netanyahu’s speech, including outside the U.S. Capitol.

Sana Wazwaz was one of the protest organizers and attendees. She said the protest remained peaceful and demonstrators were set on sending a message to legislators. 

“As long as they are going to continue financially aiding the slaughter of Palestinians and giving standing ovations to war criminals, they’re not going to see business as usual continue,” Wazwaz said.

Dozens of lawmakers skipped the congressional address in protest, including Rep. Ilhan Omar and Betty McCollum.
