Mild, breezy ahead of a significant cool front and thunder chances 

You’ve perhaps noticed the hazy skies Tuesday afternoon. That’s wildfire smoke from the western U.S. and Canada. 

While most of it is elevated now and not affecting air quality, that will likely change Wednesday. An air quality alert goes into effect late Wednesday afternoon into Thursday morning for northwestern Minnesota.

It will be a milder overnight with lows mostly in the 50s and 60s across the state under partly cloudy skies. The south breeze will persist at 5-15 mph, helping to keep temperatures milder as well. 

Clouds will increase Wednesday ahead of a cool front. Temperatures will be in the low 80s for much of southeast Minnesota, including the Twin Cities while parts of west central Minnesota will be in the mid 80s.

Scattered showers and thunder will develop later in the day for northwestern Minnesota ahead of a cool front. That thunder chance will expand statewide overnight Wednesday night into early Thursday.

There’s a marginal (level 1 of 5) threat for severe weather late Wednesday. One or two storms could produce a brief, damaging wind gust or 1-inch hail. 

Behind the cold front, temperatures will dip to their coolest readings since May for Friday and Saturday. Highs will be in just the 50s for northern Minnesota and frost will be possible in northeastern Minnesota Friday night.
